About the Poet: William Wordsworth
William Wordsworth (1770–1850) was born in Cockermouth, England. He studied at Hawkshead Grammar School, where he developed a deep love for poetry and wrote some of his earliest verses. Later, he joined St. John’s College, Cambridge. Before completing his final term, he went on a long walking tour across Europe, an experience that greatly influenced both his poetic style and political beliefs. His stay in France during the French Revolution strengthened his sympathy for the struggles and language of ordinary people.
Wordsworth’s first poetry collections, An Evening Walk and Descriptive Sketches, were published in 1793. A turning point in his career came in 1795, when he met the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Their friendship and collaboration resulted in the publication of Lyrical Ballads (1798), a landmark work that began the English Romantic movement. Although Wordsworth wrote most of the poems, Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner was one of the highlights. The second edition of this collection included a famous preface, which clearly expressed Wordsworth’s ideas about poetry and the poet’s role in society.
In 1804, while living at Dove Cottage, Wordsworth wrote one of his most famous poems, I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud. He continued writing for many years, though his later works never reached the popularity of his early poetry. After 1835, he wrote very little. In 1842, he received a government pension, and in 1843, he became the Poet Laureate of England.
The death of his beloved daughter Dora in 1847 deeply affected him, and he stopped writing poetry altogether.
Wordsworth’s greatest work, The Prelude, was published in 1850, shortly after his death. This autobiographical poem, revised many times throughout his life, explores the growth of his mind and helped create a new kind of long, reflective poem. Wordsworth died on April 23, 1850, at Rydal Mount.
