My Last Duchess Summary
“My Last Duchess” is a great dramatic monologue written by Robert Browning. The speaker is the Duke of Ferrara. The Duke’s words reveal his personality and inner thoughts. He shows his picture gallery to the Count’s envoy and talks about his last Duchess, whose portrait was painted by Fra Pandolf. The portrait was painted so beautifully that it looks lifelike. The Count’s envoy was not the first to show interest in the painting, but no one ever dared to ask any question about this adorable portrait. It actually reveals the Duke’s aggressive and possessive nature.
The Duke talks about the blush of joy on the Duchess’s cheek in the painting. It was not caused by her husband’s presence only; many trivial incidents also brought that expression. This reveals the Duchess’s innocent and childish nature—she used to appreciate even the smallest acts of courtesy. On the other hand, the Duke was quite arrogant and egoistic.
The Duke tells the envoy that his late wife had no sense of discrimination. Everything pleased her. She placed the Duke’s precious gifts in the same category as ordinary or unimportant things. The Duke considered himself a superior personality, as he had given his nine-hundred-year-old family name to the Duchess by marrying her. He was offended because she could not distinguish between people’s petty gifts and his noble heritage.
The Duke could not tolerate this for long. As the Duchess’s behaviour displeased him, he “gave commands,” and all her smiles stopped together, implying her death.
Finally, the Duke talks about his intended marriage to the Count’s daughter, expecting a great dowry along with the reputed generosity of the Count. Then he leads the envoy downstairs to meet the other guests, proudly showing off another artwork—the statue of Neptune taming a sea-horse.
